How Reality Capture Technologies are Transforming the AEC Landscape

Rok Kim, APAC Business and Customer Development Director at ClearEdge3D Inc, will join a stellar line up of speakers at next month’s Construction Innovation 2018 Forum hosted by the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors’ Association (AMCA). Rok will deliver a fascinating insight into how highly accurate laser scanning technologies are delivering enormous efficiencies and greatly minimising project risks. These new technologies in AEC will be key to providing the most cost-effective approach to improve QA/QC and BIM workflows.

Until now, Construction Quality Management has not changed much in the last century. Those in the industry typically spot check small random samples (hopefully) which usually account for 5~10% of the work. We can only hope that the rest is right as well. This is mainly because the QA/QC method still requires heavy labour investment, which we cannot afford – especially for MEP.

While the tools have improved from measuring tape to Laser DISTO and Robotic Total Stations, they still require heavy emphasis on human assistance. With the rapid growth of reality capture in the AEC industry, laser scanning technologies are beginning to democratize. Coupled with automated quality control tools like Verity, it is now feasible to check 100% of the work installed in the same time it previously took to check 5%.

Rok has an extensive background in the AEC industry, successfully building business and relationships for major players such as Bluebeam, BECK Technology, FM:Systems, MagiCAD, Enscape and Leica Geosystems throughout the Asia Pacific region. Rok will draw on this experience to deliver real examples of how industry leaders are embracing new technologies to great effect.

Since 2009, ClearEdge3D has had a track record of technological innovation and leadership in Automated Feature Extraction 3D BIM modelling from point cloud data. As a result of ClearEdge3D’s innovation, the company has won three prestigious research grants from the National Science Foundation – the preeminent government research institute in the United States. ClearEdge3D is one of many industry leaders participating in the Construction Innovation 2018 Forum. One of the most significant BIM events in the Asia Pacific region, the Forum brings together the leading thought practitioners to provide insight into the technological innovations in the building and construction industry to deliver more efficient and accurate best practice solutions.

Rok will be joined at the forum by thought leaders and practitioners from across the globe and supply chain, each providing unique insight into how leading firms are utilising technological advancements to deliver innovative best practice solutions in the building and construction industry.

This year’s forum is at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre – 23 – 24 August.
