Points are unintelligent with symbols conveying design intent or detail construction means and methods. Often plotted on paper and published in a form of drawings and specifications delivered to owner, contractor and relevant entity responsible for approval and actual construction. |
3D | A model that includes 3-D shapes. |
4D | A 3-D model that has objects that have time allocation and construction sequence scheduling presentations. |
5D | A 4-D model that has objects that have cost and simulation of construction, focusing on building sequence, cost, and resources. |
Application Programming Interface (API) | A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating systems of control programs such as a database management system. |
Big Room | A conference room dedicated to MEP Coordination meeting sessions, often found on a job worksite managed by a general contractor it is dedicated to collaboration by all members of the design and construction team during IPD. |
BIM-MEPAUS | A BIM MEP standard that defines MEP-related design and construction modelling standards for building services documentation, allowing BIM packages to be released that are specifically tailored to Australian requirements and standards. |
BIM Management Plan | Forms a key component of the BIM Execution Plan. It specifies procedures for transferring modelling content from one party to another, procedures for updating models and version control, together with archiving and backups, file naming conventions, model coordination including Big room, and model housing. |
BIM Manager | Responsible for processes involved in planning, sustainable design, 3D rendering, cost estimation, scheduling, facility and asset management, IPD, fabrication and supply chain integration. |
Building Information Modelling (BIM) | BIM is a building database that uses object data files together with parametric 3D objects to represent the elements of a building. BIM is not a piece of software but a process and workflow using technology as an enabler to create a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a building. |
CAD-DUCT | An industry standard, Autodesk add-on that brings intelligent 3D HVAC fittings into the design built environment. |
Clash detection | A process of discovering the building system conflicts and issues by collaborating in 3D during the MEP model coordination process. |
Data Exchange Specification | An electronic file format specification for the exchange of digital data. |
Data Exchange Standard | A data exchange specification developed and balloted by a standards developing organisation for the purpose of transmitting standardised data between different software applications. |
Extensible Markup Language (XML) | A general purpose specification for creating custom markup languages for computer software. The purpose of XML is to aid information systems in sharing structured data, to encode documents and to serialize data. |

Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) | IFC is a vendor neutral, open data exchange specification. It is an object oriented file format developed for the building industry to facilitate interoperability between software platforms. |
Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) | Is an approach that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harnesses the expertise of all participants. |
Intelligent objects | The object represents the geometry required to represent the component or assembly graphically but also has the ability to contain information about the related object associated. |
Interoperability | Ability to manage and communicate data and information between collaborative project teams and within individual companies for design to fabrication to facility management processes. |
Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) | The process of evaluating a component, product or building and the development from the moment of extracting materials to the disposal of that final good. It is also referred as a cradle to the grave assessment. |
