PROFESSOR ANDREW HARRIS

Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering | University of Sydney
Throughout his esteemed career, Andrew Harris (PhD, BEng, BSc, CEng, FIChemE, CPEng, FIEAust, NER, RPEQ, MAICD) has worked at the interface between industry and academia. He is an expert in disruptive innovation, with deep experience of most of the technologies likely to impact all industry sectors in the future, including IoT, robotics and automation, big data, digital, augmented and virtual reality, biomimetics, smart cities and AI.
Andrew is a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Sydney, and the Australian director of Laing O’Rourke’s future engineering and innovation consultancy, the Engineering Excellence Group. Laing O’Rourke is Australia’s largest private engineering and construction business, with local turnover of ~$3 bn p.a. Andrew received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2002 and is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and Engineers Australia (IEAust). He is a non executive Director of Hazer Group (ASX:HZR), a listed clean tech, and serves on the board of the Australian Research Council Centre for Robotic Vision. He was recognised as one of Australia’s 50 most innovative engineers by peak body Engineers Australia in 2016.
Director of Virtual Design and Construction | Victaulic
Previously a Vice President at a leading mechanical, fire protection and HVAC services company, Amanda Comunale brings a unique insight into the contractor-supplier relationship. Now Director of Virtual Design and Construction with Victaulic, Amanda leads the teams responsible for software content development, training, prefabrication analysis and drawing services. This includes the development of new offerings that allows their customers to achieve efficiencies in their modelling offices, greater accuracy throughout their estimating and procurement activities, and improved timeliness of fabrication. Amanda also holds a range of industry and community leadership positions. She is a member of the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) and the American Supply Association’s Women in Industry Division. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Stephen A. Comunale, Jr. Family Cancer Foundation, and is a board member of the Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation. She holds a BA from Union College, an MBA from Case Western Reserve University, and a certificate in Lean Six Sigma from Villanova University. She is also a graduate of Leadership Akron.
Director of Digital Delivery and Information Management | Jacobs Engineering
Liam is the Director of Digital Delivery and Information Management at Jacobs Engineering, UK and is currently working with Highways England as Head of BIM for the Smart Motorways Programme. He is responsible for the development and implementation of the BIM programme and Information Management Strategy. He has 35 years’ experience in procurement, design, configuration and implementation of design and engineering technology solutions across a broad range of engineering businesses including Highways, Railways, Aviation, Oil and Gas and Pharmaceuticals. He has worked in Europe, North America and India, managing teams of technology subject matter experts. He hails from Scotland, but now lives in London, UK.

Global BIM/IM Consultancy Director | AECOM
David’s career spans some 25 years where he has worked for some of the construction industry’s leading contractors and consultants. He is employed by multinational engineering firm AECOM as Global BIM/IM Consultancy Director, helping clients around the globe achieve better outcomes through digitised and innovative approaches to the asset life-cycle. In addition to being a Chartered Construction Manager, he is a Trustee, Fellow and Ambassador of the CIOB. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineering, Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors. David is recognised as one of the global leaders on BIM and digital asset management strategies and has delivered solutions all around the globe, including current commissions in Singapore and Latvia. He is co-author of BIM 4 Dummies and winner of the BIM Show Live, Digital Legend 2018.
After graduating with a degree in Building Engineering and Management, David joined Balfour Beatty as an Engineer spending much of his early years setting-out, planning and managing specialist sub-contractors before progressing to Director of Technical Services and subsequently BIM Programme Director. During this same time David gained an MSc in Property and Construction Management (Distinction) and was a University Medal winner, as well as gaining Virtual Design and Construction certification from Stanford University, California. He was seconded into the Cabinet Office as Head of BIM Implementation and has been part of the UK BIM Task Group helping the UK Government realise their BIM strategy. He is currently part of the UK Government’s Centre for Digital Built Britain (DBB) team at Cambridge University and also Chair of the Scottish BIM Delivery Group through the Scottish Futures Trust delivering the BIM requirements of the Scottish Government.
Managing Director | DiRoots
Jose Oliveira is an enthusiastic and experienced BIM strategist with 10 years’ experience in the industry. His genuine interest in the BIM field led him to research, develop and implement effective BIM strategies and workflows. Jose recently launched DiRoots, a BIM consultancy and digital technology company aiming to transform the AEC and manufacturers’ global communities. The vision of DiRoots is to create affordable, smart digital tools that will help designers, contractors and manufacturers disrupt and automate traditional workflows. Previous to DiRoots, he has worked as UK BIM Director at WSP and Autodesk Consulting to assist in the development and definition of the BIM guidelines for a major rail project in the Middle East. Not least, he has recently completed an MSc in BIM and Integrated Design to have a deeper and more solid understanding of BIM. Jose is currently a member of the CIBSE BIM and Digital Engineering steering group.
Group Engineering Manager | A.G. Coombs Group
Warwick Stannus is Group Engineering Manager of the A.G. Coombs Group of Companies, where he is responsible for the technical leadership and professional development for all engineering and technical staff. With a background in both the consulting and contracting sides of the construction industry, Warwick has a strong understanding of the requirements to successfully implement integrated project delivery strategies. In recent years, he has been heavily involved in the delivery of Independent Commissioning Agent services for a number of Australia’s leading Green Star projects, and has developed valuable experience in best practice sustainable design and project delivery. He also provides a range of engineering and commissioning advisory services related to central plant upgrades, data centre engineering, commissioning management and building information modelling. Warwick is Technical Director of the BIM-MEPAUS initiative, and has been pivotal in the development of industry standards, practices and workflows.
CEO and Founder | BuildingSP
Brett Young is the CEO and Founder of BuildingSP, a software development company that is at the forefront of design automation for MEP systems. BuildingSP’s products use algorithms and advanced computing to perform autorouting and interactive, real-time clash detection directly within the Autodesk Revit environment. This includes the use of generative design and machine learning in BIM workflows. This is the second startup for Brett, having previously founded Modulus Consulting, a BIM consulting firm with multimillion dollar annual revenues. He has a background in the management of large, commercial construction projects from nine years of work at Cahill Contractors, a San Francisco building general contractor. Brett is a graduate in civil and environmental engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Industry Strategy Manager – MEP and Fabrication | Autodesk
Steve Butler is Industry Strategy Manager for MEP & Fabrication at Autodesk. Steve initially joined Autodesk as a third party developer focusing on MEP software solutions. In the 10 years since, he has provided MEP product implementation support as a Customer Success Engineer; country specific solutions as Globalisation Product Line Manager; and as MEP Product Line Manager, has been responsible for technical delivery of Revit MEP and Autodesk Fabrication products. Prior to joining Autodesk, Steve worked for design consultants, contractors and manufacturers.

Todd Liebbe is an accomplished speaker and presenter. His background includes 30 years in the mechanical construction market. After completing his engineering degree at Iowa State University, Todd began his career at QuickPen where he rose through the ranks to become VP of Sales. Todd’s next stop was serving as Vice President at Quote Software, where he continued to find more pain points within the industry. Upon leaving Quote Software, Todd started Get the Point where he was instrumental in designing the innovative solution for layout which was purchased by Autodesk in 2012 and is now known as Autodesk BIM 360 Point Layout. These solutions have changed the way the industry does layout. He now assists Autodesk with the Skilled Trades Program. As President of GTP Services LLC, Todd has been on the forefront of Estimating, CAD, and Robotic Total Station solutions. He now wants to help provide a pathway for the Mechanical, Electrical, and Sheet Metal contractors in the areas of prefabrication and procurement. His team has developed applications based on Autodesk’s Revit for DeWalt (HangerWorks) and GTP (WireWorks).
Group ICT Platform Manager | Benmax Group
Daniel Maddocks is Group ICT Platform Manager at Benmax, having transferred to that role last year after three years in the position of Digital Engineering Manager with the same organisation. Through these roles and earlier experience as owner of a specialist drafting business; MECH Drafting Services which was an early contributor to the BIM-MEPAUS Template Add-In, Daniel has seen the development and growth of BIM since its first inception and is a strong advocate for BIM-MEPAUS. In his current role, Daniel is also responsible for overseeing and guiding the Benmax Group’s quality effort which is a major focus of Benmax service delivery. He has, therefore, first-hand experience in reconciling the differences between taking an innovative approach whilst also applying consistent quality processes. Daniel sees BIM as being the starting point in validating that good data is available for the design and the ultimate transfer of good data to the construction model.

Bryan Williams has 30 years of international experience working in the construction industry as a site engineer, construction surveyor, project supervisor and consultant. He has spent the last 15 years developing and marketing intelligent positioning solutions for the construction industry as part of the Trimble Buildings Group with a focus on BIM workflows.

As National Director and Victorian Executive Director with the AMCA, Sumit Oberoi has been instrumental in the development of the BIM-MEPAUS Initiative from its inception in 2010. Sumit is a passionate industry policy advocate who continually seeks to help AMCA members deliver quality projects through construction innovation.
Sumit joined the AMCA in 2009 as a Policy Analyst where he was responsible for the association’s policy program and subsequently employed as the Executive Director (Victoria). Prior to joining the AMCA, Sumit worked in numerous roles with the Victorian State Government, most notably within the Economic and Financial Policy area at the Department of Treasury and Finance. Sumit holds directorships with the Plumbing Joint Training Fund (PJTF), Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC), Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Building Services Exhibition (ARBS), and Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC). Sumit also represents the AMCA at the Australian Construction Industry Forum (ACIF) and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).
Senior Territory Sales Manager AEC ANZ | Autodesk
After graduating from RMIT as a Civil Engineer, Rafik worked in the industry for five years while completing two further degrees in computer science as well as engineering asset management, Rafik joined Autodesk four years ago as the lead for Autodesk’s Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) Territory business. Prior to joining Autodesk, Rafik held sales, technical and professional services roles with other engineering software vendors.

Bernie graduated from RMIT with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Surveying and Land Information before commencing at CR Kennedy’s technical sales and survey support. Following more than 20 years in the geospatial and survey industry, Bernie is excited to lead a dedicated team of design and construction specialists to bring Leica Building Construction solutions to the Australian market. Bernie and CR Kennedy have been long-time supporters of the AMCA and the Construction Innovation Forum.
Software Development Consultant | GTP Services
With over 27 years’ experience in software development in the MEP sector, Andy Robins was heavily involved in the development of the MAP Software product line which focused on fabrication from the onset. Prior to the MAP Software acquisition Andy played a major role in the product development of the renowned CAD-Duct and CADmep+ (now Autodesk Fabrication CADmep) AutoCAD-based applications, taking its development from a ‘2D Lisp’ based program to a full 3D c++ ObjectARX application. While spending six years with Autodesk as the software development manager his responsibilities included bringing Fabrication workflows into the Revit environment, utilising the customers’ existing Fabrication databases and protecting content investments. Currently Andy is consulting with GTP to extend Fabrication workflows from Desktop to shop and field utilising cutting edge technologies based on the Fabrication data and the Forge platform.
Digital Services Manager | Ellis Air Conditioning
Ian Pearse has over 24 years’ experience working with building technologies and telecommunications deployment. With a strong foundation in the HVAC and Electrical industries, in both construction and maintenance, he has spent many years refining workflows and strategies to increase efficiency when working with data in facilities. Over the years, Ian has been involved with many key Queensland projects and early European critical monitoring systems for companies such as Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, Reuters and The BBC. Ian was also involved in the early development of monitoring systems for data centres and disaster recovery sites. Currently employed as the Digital Services Manager for Ellis Air, with a primary focus on bringing together the static and dynamic data environments of BIM and the IoT plus taking a holistic view on the full lifecycle of digital services from early design to facilities management.

Shannon Thomas is the Executive Manager for Australia’s national BIM-MEPAUS initiative run through the AMCA (Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors’ Association). Shannon has a Bachelor of Engineering (Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management) with Honours from Monash University and completed postgraduate studies in Design Science (Building Services) from the University of Sydney. With wide ranging professional experience in a number of roles within the automotive industry, Shannon has a particular interest in using his knowledge in HVAC Design, Project Engineering, Continuous Improvement and Lean Production to help guide the implementation and successful adoption of the national BIM-MEPAUS Initiative within the Construction industry’s exciting and evolving BIM space.

Quoc is the Principal BIM Consultant at AECOM’s Brisbane office. In addition to Quoc’s ability to focus on technical aspects of software, he is also able to effectively gauge future industry trends affecting the life cycle of projects – from design and construction to facilities management. This allows Quoc to further explore and define the necessary requirements and leverage the correct processes to devise the best solution for the client. Quoc maintains a proven record of successful implementation, project delivery and management. Over the past 10 years Quoc has worked with many companies and government authorities across Australia, New Zealand, and APAC providing BIM consulting services. Most notably with ADG Engineers as Design Technology Manager and Autodesk as a BIM Consultant where he managed and implemented processes and technologies. He also developed standards, new methodologies, workflows and content to streamline supply chain processes, reduce errors and transform the architectural, engineering and construction delivery approach.

Richard Choy is the CEO of NATSPEC, a national not-for-profit organisation owned by Government and industry including AMCA, which has the objective to improve the construction quality and productivity of the sustainable built environment through leadership of information. Digital information, including 3D modelling and BIM, will provide improved methods of design, construction and communication for the industry. NATSPEC is responsible for the National BIM Guide and associated documents. NATSPEC’s latest release is the BIM Object Properties Generator enabling BIM Standardisation.
Richard has extensive design and on-site experience and has worked within both engineering and architecture. He has written and presented on numerous design and documentation subjects. Richard was a member of the AMCA BIM Steering Committee that founded BIM MEPAUS. He also sat on the BIM Committees for the Australian Institute of Architects, Consult Australia, and the government digital working group BEIIC. He currently sits on the executive of the Australasian BIM Advisory Board; is a member of the Australian Building Codes Board, and is President of the International Construction Information Society.

Brendan is the Senior Technical Consultant for MEP at A2K Technologies with a key focus on Revit MEP and Fabrication tool-sets. Brendan has almost 20 years’ experience within the AEC industry, implementing BIM standards, procedures and training and promoting the appropriate use of BIM software for users across different disciplines and multiple projects. Brendan has expert experience in multi-disciplined BIM collaboration and has been a key technical advisor for the BIM-MEPAUS industry initiative for the past five years. His current role involves the delivery of custom training, consulting and support for Revit MEP and related software throughout Australia and New Zealand. He is also a regular speaker and presenter at numerous industry recognised events and conferences throughout the year.

Carl is a senior consultant with A.G. Coombs Advisory. With over 35 years’ industry experience Carl is responsible for the provision of advice to clients on a range of facilities management related issues including asset management, commissioning, building tuning and service management and the adoption of leading edge technologies to optimise building operation and maintenance. Since 2008 Carl has been a leading advocate of Building Information Modelling in Australia, being instrumental on the early application of BIM on landmark projects and a founding member of BIM initiatives by AMCA, AIA and NATSPEC.
Carl’s experience also encompasses the asset management field, with over 10 years’ experience in the IT industry implementing service and asset management systems for a diverse range of clients including QANTAS, Telstra and Macquarie Bank.
APAC Business and Customer Development Director | ClearEdge3D
Rok Kim is the APAC Business and Customer Development Director for ClearEdge3D. Since 2009, ClearEdge3D has had a track record of technological innovation and leadership in Automated Feature Extraction 3D BIM modeling from point cloud data. As a result of ClearEdge3D’s innovation, the company has won three prestigious research grants from the National Science Foundation – the preeminent government research institute in the United States. With over seven years’ experience in the AEC industry, Mr. Kim has spent his career successfully building business and relationships for companies like, Bluebeam, BECK Technology, FM:Systems, MagiCAD, Enscape, and Leica Geosystems throughout the APAC region. Mr. Kim has focused 2018 on directing and building business for ClearEdge3D throughout Asia-Pacific. Mr. Kim believes new technologies in AEC will be key to providing the most cost-effective approach to improve QA/QC and BIM workflows.
Group BIM Development | Benmax Group
Stirling Ashby leads BIM Development at Benmax Group where his primary interest is in assisting the business to leverage technology in the automation of routine tasks, allowing the drafting team to focus more on creative problem-solving. Stirling’s vision is about empowering people, not replacing people with an algorithm, and his aim is to give construction teams the ability to do a better job through developing pragmatic BIM that adds value.
Stirling commenced with Benmax in July 2017 after a period of eight years in the mechanical drafting field, including operating his own drafting business. Stirling studied a Bachelor of Industrial Design at the University of Canberra and this background, along with several years’ hands-on experience in mechanical installation (including overseas in the UK), has seen Stirling develop a close appreciation of the challenges and interfaces between different building phases.
Technical Specialist – Reality Capture | Leica Geosystems
A trained surveyor, Gregg’s 20 years of scanning experience commenced in aviation and automotive, before seeing him work on scanning projects internationally with a range of vendors. In 2012 Gregg joined Vekta, one of Australia’s leading scanning service providers, then working with both Leica and Faro equipment before joining Leica Geosystems.
Senior Solutions Consultant | A2K Technologies
Originally from Ramsbottom in the North West of England, Dave worked in both the CAM and CAD departments for a large HVAC construction company, instrumental in the development of MAP’s CADDuct software. He spent a period working at MAP as their CAD support manager before moving to a HVAC contractor as a project engineer. He then spent five years cutting his teeth at a global multi disciplinary design practice in central Manchester. Following a move to Melbourne seven years ago Dave has spent the last three years configuring and deploying Autodesk’s Fabrication ESTmep for one of Australia’s largest HVAC Contractors. Now with A2K Technologies, he brings 30 years’ experience from the M.E.P. construction / design industry to the BIM-MEPAUS Initiative.
