BIM-MEPAUS Workflows/Introduction

Current problem facing industry

As illustrated above the problem currently facing the building services industry is demonstrated by a design consultant using proprietary software and a contractor receiving a 2D - PDF drawing in which the contractor will have to redraft and undertake detailing, fabrication and installation which is not effective.

Three BIM workflows form the basis of the BIM-MEPAUS WORKFLOWS and, in part, define the environment in which the models must operate:

  • The Federated Model.
  • BIM All The Way.
  • BIM/CAD Hybrid.

In assessing the various workflow models, the following key points are noted:

  • The Federated Model workflow is in many ways the easiest with which to work, although it is only partially BIM compliant and ultimately will not support all of the inherent value propositions underpinning the investment in BIM.
  • The BIM All The Way workflow is greatly assisted by the BIM-MEPAUS initiative and is expected to become the industry standard in the future.
  • The Hybrid BIM/CAD workflow provides the most accurate shop drawings, although is the most complex when trying to make it work efficiently.
